A whistleblower is anyone who reports misconduct or irregularities by his or her employer to a government agency. Under some federal and state whistleblower protection laws, sometimes referred to as qui tam laws, an employee is entitled to pursue a cause of legal action for money damages as a "reward" for reporting the illegal activities. In addition, under federal and state law, employers may not retaliate against the employee by using harassment, discrimination, or any practices that will lead to wrongful termination or constructive discharge because the employee has reported the employer's illegal activity.
